Fishing
The fishing is superb. An outside reef is broken with channels or passes into continuous lagoons, kilometers wide in places. The islands lie within this lagoon, a maze of channels, coral reef, sand, mudflat and mangroves.
There is no commercial fishing, only local people fishing for their own needs and occasional excess on the local ferry to Honiara. Local people will be your guides and boat drivers, in 22 feet solid, open glass boats with big outboards. Australian winter months are the most pleasant climate wise, wind and swell in the open ocean fairly light. You can fish any time or all of the time. Even the village jetty has trevally action – the silver and blue fellas occasionally terrorising the bait fish. Colourful diving lures (3-6 m) over the outside reef will attract big fish – gear up! 4016 with long wire trace is a must. Anything on the surface you can go lighter, usually barracuda, tuna and big trevally. Fishing over the reefs inside the lagoon is more forgiving, same species just smaller. Plenty of small barra and trevally that will go on anything, even a single hook with a little white nylon rope tied on. Small plastics in the shallows and mangroves are also productive. Schools of bonito (tuna) in the lagoon early morning and late afternoon but you have to share them with the dolphins. Trevally anywhere, anytime on bait fish from the jetty. MOST EFFECTIVE LURES FOR KAGATA Get the right lures before you come.
